SMWNYC Day 1: Global, Authenticity, Party
Day 1 of Social Media Week NYC 2012 was literally a buzz with engaging keynotes, panels, and networking session, far too many for one person to cover. Therefore, the best SMWNYC attendee strategy, from my experience, is to pick your spots for the in-person show-ups, and cover the rest vis a vie LiveStream feed. Accordingly, I was able to hit three Day 1 sessions, hashtagging and tweeting up a #smwnyc storm along the way. Here are the highlights: Managing Social Media on a Global Scale : This first Opening Day session found hosts Syncapse and Amway discussing, debating and sharing their best practices for managing a global social media presence across multiple countries and languages, with multiple stakeholders, distributors and marketers involved. The key takeaway centered around the idea that ”social media fosters horizontal collaboration” within businesses.
Ion iType Bluetooth Keyboard (IONITD02)
So my desire to not lug my laptop around anymore sprung up the issue of having to type A LOT on my Galaxy’s OnScreenKeyboard- something I’d rather shoot myself than do on regular bases, but a savior device was found: The little guy sports small, yet extremely comfortable size and next to no weight at all, rubberized soft squishy keys, lots of secondary functions for almost every key, a carrying case, a portable device stand, and a micro-usb cable. Everything feels pretty good and is very easy to carry in any pocket as opposed to a whole backpack of a laptop bag. Nice. To boot, this guy can be used with most bluetooth devices like PCs, Sony PS3, you name it really (and I wonder if this would work with the new PS Vita, because if so, this is definitely the gadget of the month!). And price point?

Nokia mobiles to axe 4,000 jobs, move assembly to Asia By Tarmo Virki, Reuters February 8, 2012 9:06 AM HELSINKI – Struggling Finnish phone maker Nokia mobiles plans to cut 4,000 more jobs at its plants in Finland, Hungary and Mexico as it seeks to cut costs by moving smartphone assembly work to Asia. The cuts of 8 per cent of the phone business workforce bring total planned job cuts at the group since Stephen Elop took over as chief executive in September 2010 to more than 30,000. Nokia mobiles said in a statement the job cuts would take place in phases through this year. It has been reviewing the operations since unveiling the closure of its Romania plant last September.

Ubuntu 11.10 and Mobile broadband connection with Nokia mobiles
WIth Ubuntu 11.10, when you connect your Nokia mobiles phone using USB cable, it is detected as a CD device (for some reason I have no idea of) if you select “connect to Internet” from the phone’s menu after connecting. As shown in the “dmesg” output: 9569.002260 scsi 8:0:0:0: CD-ROM Nokia mobiles XXX 1.0 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2 In this case the “mobile broadband” connection is not shown by the network manager, and you won’t be able to connect using it. Instead, select “PC Suite mode” from the phone menu after connecting it to the computer. The output of “lsusb” should show something like this: Bus 002 Device 007: ID 0421:00ab Nokia mobiles Mobile Phones XXX (PC Suite mode) which shows that the mobile is connected using PC Suite mode. Then you should be able to see the “mobile broadband” section in the network manager dropdown applet
